About GRARE, an overview

We are a growing organization dedicated to improving the availability of information for the proper care of reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods in captivity. We strive to achieve this goal in three distinct ways:

Education:

Our educational program branch is called Creepy Critters. We provide quality live animal educational programs to schools, youth and civic groups, social events, and even birthday parties. These programs are geared for a fun time while learning about the realities and myths of these animals. Check out our Educational Programs pages for more information.

Resource Referral:

We hope to tie together as many reptile/amphibian rehabilitators as possible into a working network; sharing ideas, resources, and educational opportunities. If someone in Valdosta has a donation source for heat lamps, and someone in Augusta needs some, we want to help get them together. (sort of like a reptile supply E-bay, only no charge!). We are also starting collection of what we hope will be an extremely large and comprehensive reference and On Line library which will be open to the public for on site reading and research. This library will cover natural history, captive husbandry and propagation, conservation, medical and research issues.

In addition to this, we will be posting numerous care and info sheets, and hosting a large selection of categorized links to other information and service sites.

Rescue and Rehabilitation:

We will be providing rehabilitation and rescue for native and exotic reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods. We intend to do this working in conjunction with state and federal wildlife agencies, animal control facilities, veterinary associations and private practices, and zoological associations. At the current time, our rehab efforts are small due to space and money constraints.

What Are We Doing Now?

We are gathering supplies and contacts to aid in our upcoming expansion. A lot of time and energy has been focused on getting our educational programs up and running using our existing resources and personnel.

At the present time, our operations are small. We are currently equipped to handle lizards under 6 feet, snakes under 10 feet, turtles and tortoises under 100 lbs, all amphibians (temporary housing available for giants), and all arthropods. Our present animal quota stands around fifty individuals, mostly snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises.

High Hopes For The Future

Some of the items we hope are in store for GRARE in the upcoming years include funding and beginning construction of a full blown facility for rescue/rehab, developing a volunteer core, and building supply source networks. We are in the beginning planning stages for a "dream" facility including tropical greenhouses, various terrain turtle ponds and tortoise pens, crocodilian ponds, quarantine facilities, and small scale veterinary capacity. This facility would also house our reference library, and have housing space for potential researchers, veterinarians and interns. Once we come up with the dream plan, we will begin to apply a healthy dose of reality, and see what we end up with!

One of the primary focuses right now is building our resource base by finding sources for donations and funding. We are soliciting for anything from land to light bulbs, and volunteers to help with looking up potential suppliers, making phone calls, cleaning cages, building cages...... If you have any suggestions or items, please contact us at the e-mail address on the bottom of this page!
