The scientific classification of Testudo sp. is a hotly debated topic. There are currently several different naming schemes in use in literature. Anyone wishing to write on these tortoises is forced to decide which classification scheme to follow. This has an impact on the common names for these tortoises, and can be very confusing to pet owners who are trying to figure out what tortoise they have, and how to properly care for it.
We will be developing a guide to identification of the Mediterranean tortoises based on their shell structure (morphology) and their coloration. Since coloration is quite variable, it will only be used as a reference when distinctive for the species. We will follow the naming scheme which, in our opinion, makes captive care issues easier to address.
